George Washington did it on December 25, 1776. We did it too. That is, crossing the Delaware River. Today we traveled 75 miles from Annapolis, Maryland to Delaware City, Delaware.
We cruised across the north end of the Chesapeake Bay, through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, and then crossed the Delaware River to enter Delaware City Marina. The north end of Chesapeake Bay must have a lot of fog, because the ship channel is equipped with strobes that light your way through safe deep water.
At 5pm today Tristan, the Delaware City Marina Dockmaster, hosted an informal briefing for captains, summarizing winds, tides and other factors affecting travel tomorrow down the Delaware River to Cape May, where the Delaware River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Tomorrow’s weather looks good! Winds will be light, and if we leave at slack tide tomorrow around 8:00 AM we will get off easily and have a 2 MPH push from tidal current down the Delaware River to Cape May, New Jersey.
