On Friday at 0700, we left the dock at riverside marina in Port Huron, waited for and then idled under two lift bridges in the downtown area, and turned to port (North) into the deep St. Clair River.
As we got closer to the US-Canada bridge and approached Lake Huron, we felt more and more current and the water surface was wild, with current-forced waves and eddies.
The river, and even more so Lake Huron, are an aquamarine BLUE!
We traveled 64 miles at the 10-11 mph pace of our Looper friends Ray and Diane on Radian Journey. Lake Huron waters started flat and developed small rollers by the time we entered the breakwall and passed the lighthouse at Harbor Beach.
The Harbor Beach State Marina was rebuilt about one year ago and is beautiful: new, wide floating docks, generous-sized slips, and modern amenities.
One of the staffers used the marina’s courtesy van to shuttle us into the nearby town for a late lunch/early dinner at Smalleys Bar and Grill, the only restaurant we noticed in the historic downtown area. The burgers were tasty!
We then walked a few buildings south and saw the museum/home of local lawyer Frank Murphy, whose remarkable career accomplishments included Mayor of Detroit, Governor of Michigan, and Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The day and evening weather was just right, the sunset was a work of art, and the four of us ended the evening watching a movie aboard R&R.
